Our patient approach

Dr Briffa believes that no two patients are the same, and this is the basis of why working with mental health is so fascinating. Good psychiatry always strives to look at or integrate the whole person, and identify possible root causes, most often a combination of possible root causes. These root causes might include, for example, stressful personal and work circumstances and relationships; adverse life experiences; the beliefs we have about ourselves and the rules we set for our lives; how we nourish our minds and bodies; our brain health; and identifying and working with neurodivergence.

Every patient benefits from an individualised approach and Dr Briffa aims to provide a path of hope for each of her patients.

Dr Briffa believes in staying abreast of the constantly evolving landscape of options to optimise mental health and neurodiversity, including self-help, patient education, occupational and social support, functional psychiatry, medical investigations, formal therapies, prescribing and de-prescribing medication and much, much more. No two patients will need the same approach.

Dr Briffa particularly believes in supporting her patients to strive towards achieving and retaining higher education and work, wherever possible. Work is generally good for mental health; and mental health is vital for work. Specialist psychiatric input with Dr Briffa will mean expert identification of mental health symptoms that interface with work and higher education; and a focus on possible solutions to manage them.

Dr Briffa looks forward to meeting you and welcoming you to your initial assessment.  Thereafter, she can offer case management to help you understand your progress, provide you with individualised options and collaboratively support you to try out specific interventions, when you are ready.

What can I expect?

It is completely normal to feel nervous before a consultation, it is an important meeting after all. Please prioritise your comfort- consider your space and the things you might need to keep you comfortable.  Bring that cuppa!

Dr Briffa will also prioritise your comfort, which includes you being fully in control of your information at all times. For example, sometimes patients expect that they will be asked for full details of past trauma and this can be a barrier to asking for help in the first place. It is common for a patient to struggle to talk about details of past trauma. Dr Briffa will always work with you, at your pace, respecting what you are and are not able to talk about, at any one time. She will also continue to check your comfort, during the meeting and help you to get the most out of the time you have available.

At the start of the consultation, Dr Briffa will ask you what you would like to focus on, which may have changed since you completed the referral form, no problem!  Commonly, during a meeting with Dr Briffa, a patient’s priority is to tell their story, in their own way and explore their options for managing their situation.  Sometimes patients wish to prioritise a focus on whether there is an appropriate formal diagnosis for their symptoms.  Dr Briffa is happy to help focus on your priorities and will guide you throughout.
